Candidates must successfully complete several exams in order to be eligible for appointment as a Police Officer. In addition, candidates must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age before an appointment can be scheduled. In addition, candidates must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. To obtain a copy of a motor vehicle accident report, please provide:
- A check or money order payable to the Waterbury Police Department in the amount of $1.00.
- A self addressed stamped envelope.
- The police department case number, if known.
- The location and the parties involved in the accident, if known.
- The date, location and time of accident, if known.
How can I obtain an application for a Pistol Permit if I am unable to come to the Records Division?

- A written request for pistol permit application and directions.
- Enclose a self addressed stamped envelope.

Internal Affairs Bureau investigates allegations of misconduct against members of the Waterbury Police Department.
How do i make a complaint?
Can I make a report anonymously?
No. All complaints must in writing and signed by a notary republic.
When I file a complaint does it have to be written and notarized?
In most cases it is preferred that the complaint be in writing and notarized.
What if I do not know or cannot afford a notary?
Bring your written complaint to the police department and a superior officer will notarize it for you, free of charge.
What is the time frame of an investigation into a complaint?
Investigations are completed in a timely manner. Because each investigation is unique, it’s difficult to give an exact time frame.
Where do I get a complaint form?
You can pick up a complaint form at the front desk of the police department or contact the Internal Affairs Division at (203) 574-6948, and one will be mailed to you.
After I complete the form, what do I do with it?
You can bring the completed form to the police department and present it to the patrol captain or the supervising officer at the front desk. The complaint will be forwarded to the Chief of Police. If you wish, you can mail the form to:

How will I know the Chief of Police received my complaint?
You will receive a letter through the mail indicating that your complaint was received.
Who will take my fingerprints?
The Waterbury Police Department Forensics Unit provides fingerprinting services to the public.
When can I come to get my fingerprints taken?
There are three times we are open for fingerprints during the week. There are two sessions on Tuesdays – 8:30am to 11:30am – and one session on Thursdays – 8:30am to 11:30am. Please do not call for an appointment as they are not necessary. There are no fingerprinting sessions on holidays.
What do I need to bring with me?
If you need to be fingerprinted for employment purposes, please be sure to bring a photo ID and your fingerprint card(s). The Waterbury Police Department does not provide fingerprint cards for employment background checks. You must bring your cards with you from your employer.
If you are being fingerprinted for a pistol permit application or a pardon application, we will provide the cards to you.
Where do I go to get my fingerprints taken?
The Forensics Unit is located in the Waterbury Police Department at 255 East Main Street in Waterbury, CT. Let the officers at the front desk know you are there to get fingerprinted and they will assist you.
How much will it cost?
Fees for fingerprinting are as follows:
Waterbury residents: $5.00 per card
Waterbury Board of Education: $5.00 per card
Non-Waterbury residents (unless Board of Ed.): $10.00
Pistol Permits*: No charge
*Pistol permit fingerprint applications have no charge; however, you must bring with you TWO (2) money orders or certified bank checks (no personal checks), one in the amount of $19.25 made out to the Department of Public Safety, and the second in the amount of $50.00 also made out to the Department of Public Safety. As of October 1, 2009, DPS is requiring a separate $50.00 payment for the State of Connecticut criminal background check. The $19.25 payment is for the FBI criminal background check.
Payments for other applications (employment, pardon, DCF, etc) must be made with cash, money order or certified bank check. Personal checks, credit cards, and debit cards are NOT accepted.
