Internal Affairs

Internal Affairs Division

The Internal Affairs Division is an essential component of the Waterbury Police Department as it provides citizens with a fair and effective avenue for the redress of their grievances against members of the organization. The thorough and timely investigation of citizen complaints has the dual purpose of ensuring all department personnel are providing proper and high-quality level of service to the community, as well as providing department personnel with due process safeguards and protection from false allegations of misconduct.

Inspectional Services

Inspectional Services works with the Internal Affairs Division to assure professionalism and efficiency within the Waterbury Police Department. Inspectional Services is a process that is an essential mechanism for evaluating the quality of the department’s operations, ensuring that the department’s goals are being pursued, identifying the need for additional resources, and ensuring that control is maintained throughout the department.

Inspections of this nature may include: evaluation of facilities, vehicles, equipment, records, personnel, investigative procedures, crime reporting practices, and incident reports, as these activities relate to the effectiveness and efficiency of the department as a whole.

Citizen Satisfaction

Citizen satisfaction is critically important to any public agency, and community members’ feelings about police services are evaluated through compliments, suggestions, and complaints. The feedback that is received from the City of Waterbury citizens, along with the regular supervisory review, allows our department to operate at the highest standards possible and provide dependable and quality service to the community.

Complaint Procedure

If you believe a Waterbury Police Department employee has acted improperly, and wish to file a formal complaint, you may contact the Internal Affairs Division by telephone, e-mail, or postal mail. Complaints of serious misconduct will be investigated by the Internal Affairs Division, which reports directly to the Chief of Police and is independent of the officer’s command. Complaints of less serious nature are often best handled by discussing your concerns with that officer’s immediate supervisor in their respective division. We value the thoughts and concerns of our citizenry. As such all complaints are investigated.
