Upholding Integrity Through Accountability

The Internal Affairs Division plays a critical role in preserving the integrity and professionalism of the Waterbury Police Department. It provides citizens with a fair and effective channel to voice grievances against department personnel while ensuring that every complaint is investigated thoroughly and objectively. This process not only helps maintain community trust but also protects officers with due process and shields them from unfounded allegations.

Inspectional Services

Inspectional Services works in tandem with Internal Affairs to monitor and evaluate departmental performance. Through inspections of facilities, equipment, procedures, and personnel, this unit ensures departmental goals are being met efficiently and professionally. These reviews help identify resource needs and maintain operational control across all units, promoting accountability at every level.

Citizen Satisfaction

The Waterbury Police Department values your feedback. Community input—through compliments, suggestions, and complaints—guides our efforts to uphold high service standards. This feedback, combined with supervisory review, helps shape a more responsive, trustworthy, and effective department.

Officer Recognition

We proudly acknowledge our officers for outstanding service through formal commendations. If you’ve had a positive experience with a department employee, we encourage you to let us know. Your compliments are shared directly with the officer and their supervisor. To share a commendation, simply call or send a letter to the respective division.

Types of recognition include:

  • Written Acknowledgements
  • Departmental Awards
  • Community-Sponsored Awards

Complaint Procedure

If you believe a Waterbury Police Department employee has acted improperly, and wish to file a formal complaint, you may contact the Internal Affairs Division by telephone, e-mail, or postal mail. Complaints of serious misconduct will be investigated by the Internal Affairs Division, which reports directly to the Chief of Police and is independent of the officer’s command. Complaints of less serious nature are often best handled by discussing your concerns with that officer’s immediate supervisor in their respective division. We value the thoughts and concerns of our citizenry. As such all complaints are investigated.
