Supporting and Protecting Waterbury’s Youth

The Juvenile Division operates under the Criminal Investigations Bureau, handling all cases involving individuals under the age of 18. Detectives and School Resource Officers (SROs) work collaboratively to address juvenile-related complaints with a focus on prevention, positive outcomes, and adherence to state laws. Whenever possible, the division takes a supportive approach that prioritizes safety, security, and constructive engagement.

School Resource Officers (SROs)

One of the core responsibilities of the Juvenile Division is providing a visible, approachable police presence in Waterbury schools. SROs strive to build positive relationships with students, teachers, and faculty, acting as mentors, role models, and trusted points of contact. By fostering open communication and encouraging positive decision-making, SROs help strengthen the connection between law enforcement and the city’s youth.

SROs also play an important role in identifying potential issues early, gathering intelligence, and collaborating with the Criminal Investigations Bureau to address juvenile-related crimes.

Youth-Focused Programs

The Juvenile Division supports and participates in youth engagement programs that promote safety, education, and positive police interaction. These programs include classroom presentations on topics such as:

  • Stranger danger and personal safety
  • Bullying prevention
  • Handgun and firearm safety
  • Drug and substance awareness
  • Bicycle and pedestrian safety
  • Internet and social media safety
