Training Academy
Your Career Starts Here
The Waterbury Police Department operates its own Police Officer Standards and Training Council (POSTC) Satellite Police Academy, providing recruits with a comprehensive foundation for a career in law enforcement. Since its opening in 2005, the academy has graduated hundreds of officers for the Waterbury Police Department and other agencies throughout Connecticut.
Through a 31-week program that combines more than 1,000 hours of physical, academic, and practical instruction, recruits receive expert-led training from current WPD officers, instructors from other police agencies, and civilian specialists. Upon graduation, officers continue their development through the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP), working alongside a Field Training Officer for an additional 400 hours in real-world policing situations.
Comprehensive, Hands-On Training
The Academy’s curriculum is designed to prepare officers for the demands of modern policing, blending classroom education with scenario-based exercises and physical conditioning. Training includes, but is not limited to:
- National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Training
- Yearly Firearms Qualifications
After academy graduation, recruits begin the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP), a 10-week, 400-hour program where they apply their skills alongside experienced officers. This phase bridges classroom training with active duty, ensuring each officer is confident, capable, and prepared to serve the community.
Police Officer Standards and Training Council (POSTC) Standards
The Waterbury Police Academy meets all POSTC requirements for police training in the State of Connecticut. All candidates must successfully complete the selection process and meet POSTC entrance standards before beginning academy instruction.
The City of Waterbury and the Department of Human Resources conduct thorough background investigations and testing to ensure each recruit is ready for the challenges of the profession.
