Investigating Crime in Waterbury

The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for collecting and analyzing information on criminal activity within the City of Waterbury. Detectives conduct interviews, take statements from victims, witnesses, and suspects, prepare and execute search and seizure warrants, serve arrest warrants, locate wanted suspects, and testify in court. Many members also bring specialized skills and training to address serious and complex crimes, ensuring thorough investigations and justice for victims.

Specialized Units & Areas of Focus

Major Crimes Unit

This unit investigates the most serious offenses in the city, including homicides, suspicious deaths, shootings, and other high-profile cases. Detectives work closely with local, state, and federal partners to ensure thorough investigations and successful case resolutions.

Special Victims Unit

Investigates sexual assaults, crimes against children, and other sensitive cases, providing victim-centered investigations with specialized training.

Computer Crimes Unit

Handles digital investigations, including online child exploitation, computer intrusions, and digital forensic examinations on devices and cell phones.

Auto Theft Task Force

Focuses on reducing vehicle thefts and recovering stolen vehicles. Detectives analyze theft patterns, gather intelligence, interview offenders, and collaborate with other agencies.

Burglary Squad

Investigates burglaries and property crimes through proactive fieldwork, pawnshop checks, data collection, and close collaboration with the Forensic Laboratory.

Drone Unit

The Drone Unit supports investigations, search-and-rescue operations, crime scene documentation, and public safety monitoring. Drones provide aerial perspectives that improve situational awareness and help locate suspects or missing persons more quickly.

Forensics Unit

The Forensics Division operates under the Criminal Investigation Bureau and includes the Crime Scene Unit, Video Analysis Unit, and Firearms Unit.

  • Crime Scene Unit: Documents and processes scenes, collecting and preserving evidence for analysis or reconstruction. Available 24/7, 365 days a year.
  • Video Analysis Unit: Reviews and analyzes video evidence, determining its relevance and supporting investigations with visual data.
  • Public Fingerprinting: Provided through a partnership with Biometric Identification Services, allowing officers to focus on investigative work.

Real Time Crime Center (RTCC)

The RTCC delivers real-time intelligence to officers in the field, using:

  • 2,000+ live camera feeds citywide
  • License Plate Readers (LPRs)
  • Body-Worn Camera data
  • Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD)
  • UAV support

Partnerships with agencies like CT Probation & Parole, the Waterbury Education Department, and the CT National Guard Counter Drug Analyst. Two full-time crime analysts monitor trends, process community tips, and support proactive crime prevention strategies.
