WATERBURY POLICE ARREST SUSPECT IN FATAL HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT
Waterbury Police Officers identified the suspect driver in the fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred on Dec. 28th, 2025, as Dion Schontten, 23, of Waterbury.
Crash investigators determined there to be probable cause that Schontten was the driver in the incident and a warrant was secured for his arrest. On Jan. 7th, 2026, crash investigators located Schontten at his probation appointment and successfully took custody of him.
Schontten is charged with:
- Evading Responsibility Resulting in Death
- Tampering with Physical Evidence
- Misconduct with a MV
- Illegal Operation of a MV Under Suspension
Schontten was presented to court this morning on a $100,000 bond.

On Dec. 28th, 2025, at 9:14 p.m., Waterbury Police Patrol Officers responded to the area of 410 Reidville Drive for reports of an accident involving a pedestrian. Officers responded to scene and observed a pedestrian down on the roadway with facial trauma. Neither the striking vehicle, nor its operator, was on scene at the time of police arrival. The pedestrian, identified as Sabrina Starkey, 43, of Waterbury, was transported to a local hospital and later died of her injuries.
This remains an active and open investigation being handled by the department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU).
